The Newmarket Public Library digitization project, part of Newmarket’s larger Strategic Digital Initiative currently undertaken by a consortium of local partners, seeks to digitize its microfilm collection of the Newmarket Era (and its several incarnations) and bring the town’s cultural heritage to light. The Era since its inception in 1852, has enjoyed a publishing run of 152 years. The goal of this project is to digitize from the years 1852 to 1977, or approximately 78% of its total publishing run.
The library has partnered with Knowledge Ontario, a collaboration of libraries, cultural heritage organizations and educational institutions. The digitization staff works directly with the Our Ontario arm of Knowledge Ontario, uploading its digital newspaper content to the Our Ontario servers and making it available to the wider community. The digitized newspapers will also be available on the library’s web site and available internally and externally to anyone with an internet connection.
